The majority of Indian South Africans are the descendants of indentured workers brought to Natal between 1860 and 1911 to develop the sugar industry in this province. These indentured workers were under contract to work for a defined period of time, usually without pay but in exchange for free passage from India to South Africa. In 1911, India prohibited the indentured labour to Natal because of the ill treatment of its citizens in the Province. Today Durban is the largest ‘Indian’ city outside India.
