Traditional healers of southern, central and east Africa perform holistic and symbolic forms of healing. Embedded in the belief of their culture, ancestors in the afterlife guide and protect the living. These healers are chosen by the ancestors to carry out this work. Neglecting to do so would show a lack of respect and would result in sickness or eventual death. Through the healers, the ancestors from the spirit world give instruction and advice to heal illness, social disharmony and spiritual difficulties. Traditional healers are highly revered and respected in their society, restoring harmony between the living and the dead. Vital for a trouble-free life, the ancestors must be shown respect through ritual and animal sacrifice.
